Going Solo

Originally, this wasn’t meant to be a solo podcast.

We had a team. A good one, too—different perspectives, different tastes, all equally annoyed about the state of gaming. The idea was to share the mic, have a proper moan, and enjoy the back-and-forth.

But life got in the way. People got busy. Timezones didn’t line up. Energy drained. The usual story. Nothing dramatic. No rage quits. Just the slow decay of trying to organise anything with adults who have lives. So now, it’s me. Alone. Talking to a microphone.

I’m the Grumpy Old Gamer. Always grumpy. Getting older by the minute. Between parenting, housework, and wondering where my bloody reading glasses are, I occasionally get to play games. And when I do, I often come away annoyed—at the design, at the monetisation, at the sheer noise of it all. So I decided that instead of binning the podcast, I’d just carry on. Ranting. Rambling. Complaining.

This doesn’t mean there won’t be other voices. From time to time, there might be a guest—someone who knows a game inside out, or someone who remembers when things weren’t quite so broken. But the core format is simple: it’s me, one mic, one topic, every two weeks. Half an hour, give or take. No endless tangents, no fake enthusiasm, no pretending to like something just because it’s new.

If that sounds miserable, that’s fine. It is, sometimes. But it’s also honest. And occasionally funny. And sometimes I even say something worth hearing. Probably by accident.

The first episode drops 6th August. It’s called Gaming is Shit Now, Right? which sets the tone nicely. After that, we’ve got episodes on movie tie-ins, Half-Life 2, Fortnite, the rise and fall of Command & Conquer, Doom’s legacy, Resident Evil, the cost of modern games, and why Frostpunk is possibly the most accidentally profound game of the last decade. That takes us to Christmas. Then a break. Then we come back for more.

So yeah. The team’s gone. The plan’s changed. But the podcast’s still happening. And if nothing else, it’ll be consistent. Grumpy. Opinionated. And not trying to please everyone.

If you’re tired of shiny nonsense and just want to hear a knackered bloke moan about skill trees and unskippable tutorials, you’re in the right place.

Episode One. August 6th.

See you then—if I remember what day it is.
